jQuery is a fast, lightweight JavaScript library created by John Resig in 2006 that simplifies HTML document traversal, event handling, animation, and AJAX calls for web development. It became a near-universal tool for front-end developers in the 2000s and 2010s by smoothing over cross-browser inconsistencies in the DOM. Though less dominant since the rise of frameworks like React and Vue, it still underlies a large share of existing websites.
