J2EE (Java 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition) was the earlier name (used from 1999 through the early 2000s) for what later became Java EE, a set of specifications for building large-scale, multi-tier enterprise applications with technologies like servlets, JSP, and EJB. It was used by enterprise software developers to create scalable business applications running on application servers like BEA WebLogic or IBM WebSphere. Oracle later renamed it Java EE before it moved to the Eclipse Foundation as Jakarta EE.
