Istio is an open-source service mesh that manages communication between microservices running in Kubernetes and other environments, handling traffic routing, load balancing, encryption (mTLS), observability, and access policies without changing application code. Platform engineers and DevOps teams use it to add reliability, security, and monitoring to complex distributed systems. It was originally created by Google, IBM, and Lyft.
