Internal auditing is an independent, objective function within an organization that evaluates the effectiveness of risk management, internal controls, and governance processes. Internal auditors, often reporting to an audit committee or board, review financial records, operational procedures, and compliance practices to identify inefficiencies, fraud risk, or control weaknesses. It differs from external auditing in that it serves management and the board rather than producing a public opinion for shareholders.
