An indicator of compromise (IoC) is a piece of forensic evidence, such as a malicious IP address, file hash, domain name, or unusual network traffic pattern, that suggests a system has been breached or is under attack. Cybersecurity analysts and threat hunters use IoCs to detect intrusions, feeding them into SIEM tools and threat intelligence platforms to identify and respond to malware or attacker activity. Sharing IoCs across organizations helps improve collective defense against known threats.
