An ICO, or Initial Coin Offering, is a fundraising method used by cryptocurrency and blockchain projects in which new digital tokens are sold to investors, often in exchange for established cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin or Ethereum, to raise capital before a project launches. ICOs became especially popular around 2017 as an alternative to traditional venture funding, though they have since faced increased regulatory scrutiny due to fraud risks. Entrepreneurs and blockchain startups have used them to fund development, while investors participate hoping for token value appreciation.
