Homeopathy is an alternative medicine system developed in the late 18th century by Samuel Hahnemann, based on the principle that highly diluted substances which cause symptoms in healthy people can treat similar symptoms in the sick ('like cures like'). Practitioners, called homeopaths, prescribe individualized remedies for a range of ailments, though the practice is not supported by mainstream scientific evidence of efficacy beyond placebo. It remains popular in parts of Europe, India, and among people seeking natural or gentle alternatives to conventional pharmaceuticals.
