GNU (a recursive acronym for "GNU's Not Unix") is a free software operating system project started by Richard Stallman in 1983 to create a complete Unix-compatible system composed entirely of free software. It provides many core utilities and tools used in Linux distributions (often called GNU/Linux), including the GNU Compiler Collection (GCC), Bash shell, and GNU Core Utilities. The GNU Project also established the GPL (General Public License), a foundational license in the free and open-source software movement.
