# Git Remote

A Git remote is a reference to a version of a repository hosted elsewhere, such as on GitHub, GitLab, or a company's internal server, that a local repository can push changes to or pull changes from. Developers use remotes (commonly named 'origin') to collaborate with teammates, back up their work, and synchronize code across different machines and contributors. Managing remotes is a fundamental skill for anyone working with distributed version control.
