An electrocardiogram is a diagnostic test that records the electrical activity of the heart over time using electrodes placed on the skin, producing a waveform tracing used to detect arrhythmias, heart attacks, and other cardiac conditions. It is a routine, noninvasive procedure performed by nurses, technicians, and physicians in clinics, hospitals, and emergency settings. Interpreting an EKG requires recognizing characteristic wave patterns (P, QRS, T) and their timing.
