The Data Encryption Standard (DES) is a symmetric-key block cipher developed in the 1970s and adopted as a U.S. federal standard for encrypting electronic data. It was widely used in banking and government systems for decades but is now considered insecure due to its short 56-bit key length, which makes it vulnerable to brute-force attacks. DES has largely been replaced by more secure algorithms like AES (Advanced Encryption Standard).
