Apache Storm is an open-source distributed real-time computation system used for processing unbounded streams of data with low latency. Originally developed at BackType (later acquired by Twitter), it was designed for use cases like real-time analytics, online machine learning, and continuous computation where speed is critical. It has been largely supplanted by newer stream processing frameworks like Apache Flink and Kafka Streams, but was historically foundational to real-time big data processing.
