Apache Pig is a high-level platform for creating data analysis programs that run on Hadoop, using a scripting language called Pig Latin instead of writing raw MapReduce code. It was developed at Yahoo to simplify complex data transformations and ETL jobs on large datasets for engineers who preferred a procedural scripting approach over SQL-like Hive queries. Its usage has diminished as Spark-based tools have become the preferred choice for big data processing.
