Apache Mesos is an open-source cluster manager that abstracts CPU, memory, storage, and other compute resources away from individual machines, enabling fault-tolerant, elastic distributed systems to be built and run easily. It was developed at UC Berkeley and used heavily by companies like Twitter and Airbnb to run diverse workloads, including Hadoop, Spark, and containerized applications, on shared infrastructure. Its use has declined as Kubernetes became the dominant container orchestration standard.
