Apache Mahout is an open-source library providing distributed and scalable machine learning algorithms, originally built to run on top of Hadoop's MapReduce and later extended to Spark. Data scientists and engineers used it for tasks like collaborative filtering, clustering, and classification on large datasets. Its popularity has declined as other machine learning frameworks like Spark MLlib and scikit-learn have become more dominant.
