Apache Hadoop is an open-source framework for distributed storage and processing of very large datasets across clusters of commodity servers, built around the Hadoop Distributed File System (HDFS) and the MapReduce processing model. Data engineers use it to store and batch-process petabyte-scale data, and it underpins big data infrastructure at many enterprises. Though Spark and cloud-native tools have since eclipsed parts of its role, it remains foundational to the modern big data ecosystem.
