# Accounting Ledgers

Accounting ledgers are the core records in a bookkeeping system where all financial transactions are organized by account (such as cash, accounts receivable, or expenses) after being initially recorded in journals. The general ledger aggregates these accounts to produce a company's financial statements, including the balance sheet and income statement. Bookkeepers and accountants maintain ledgers, whether in physical books historically or, more commonly today, within accounting software.
