# California Opened 798 Roles This Week, Up 30% — But 10 of 12 States Grew Faster | Career App Daily

*September 12, 2026, by Ben Garves*

California posted **798 new roles** in the last seven days across the employer job boards we track, up from 613 the week before — a gain of 185 postings, or 30.2%. That is the biggest raw number of any state in our data, and it is also one of the weakest percentage moves on the board.

Luckily, the national numbers had a stronger week. Across every board we track, **10,338** roles opened in the last seven days against **7,182** the prior week, a 43.9% increase. California grew at roughly two-thirds that pace. Of the 12 states with openings in this cut, only Tennessee (232 vs 230, +0.9%) moved less.

## California is still the volume leader

[Jobs in California](https://career.thegoodapps.co/jobs/in/california) accounted for 798 of the 4,030 new roles that carry a state in our data this week — 19.8%. A week earlier it was 613 of 2,536, or 24.2%. So California's absolute count went up while its share of the state-tagged flow went down by about four and a half points.

The 12 states below cover 4,030 of the 10,338 roles that opened this week.

[Texas](https://career.thegoodapps.co/jobs/in/texas) is second at 563 (from 355), and [New York](https://career.thegoodapps.co/jobs/in/new-york) third at 475 (from 297). Both grew close to 59%.

## Where the acceleration actually happened

The fast movers this week were mid-sized states, not the big three. [Pennsylvania](https://career.thegoodapps.co/jobs/in/pennsylvania) went from 101 new roles to 261 — a 158% jump off a small base. [New Jersey](https://career.thegoodapps.co/jobs/in/new-jersey) went 98 to 213, [Colorado](https://career.thegoodapps.co/jobs/in/colorado) 95 to 194, and [Michigan](https://career.thegoodapps.co/jobs/in/michigan) 114 to 219. Each of those roughly doubled or better. When bases are this small, a single employer opening a batch of requisitions can move the whole line, so treat the percentages as directional.

## Context from the wider board

The site currently shows **57,599 open listings** from **685 employers**. In the last seven days, 10,338 roles opened and 20,412 closed — closures ran at about twice the pace of new postings, which is why a strong week-over-week gain in new roles does not necessarily mean a bigger board. Remote made up 4% of new postings.

The 30-day view is milder than the weekly one: 31,248 new roles in the last 30 days against 26,351 in the 30 before that, up 18.6%. The week-over-week comparison counts only boards we were already tracking before the comparison window opened, so newly onboarded employers do not read as a hiring surge.

For posted pay, the deepest pool across all boards is [Software Engineer](https://career.thegoodapps.co/occupations/software-engineer) at a $240,000 median annual figure over 1,062 listings, from employer-posted ranges annualized to USD. Those are national across the boards we track, not California-specific.
