This Staff Engineer role leads the technical vision for Chainguard's Package and Image Automation team, designing and building the systems that automatically create, test, and maintain secure container images at scale. The position combines hands-on Go development with AI/LLM integration, system architecture, and mentorship, suited for experienced engineers who can drive both technical strategy and hands-on delivery in the open-source security space.

## Required

- 7+ years of software engineering experience designing complex systems
- Strong Go expertise
- Experience building AI/LLM-integrated systems for code generation or automation
- Systems architecture and design skills
- Experience building developer tools, CLIs, or automation platforms
- Deep Linux and build systems knowledge including package managers and build tools
- Container ecosystem expertise (Docker, OCI, registries, Kubernetes)
- Ability to influence roadmap and technical direction
- Strong technical communication and autonomous collaboration
- Based in US or Canada

## Nice to have

- Experience with Linux distributions (Wolfi, Red Hat, Ubuntu, etc.)
- Track record maintaining large production service fleets
- Open-source project contributions
- Software supply chain security knowledge (SBOM, provenance, signing)
- Experience with melange, apko, or Wolfi
- Familiarity with compliance frameworks (FedRAMP, FIPS, STIG)
