Vale tudo (Portuguese for "anything goes") is a Brazilian full-contact combat sport with minimal rules that emerged in the early 20th century, blending techniques from boxing, wrestling, capoeira, and jiu-jitsu. It grew out of challenge matches, notably those involving the Gracie family, meant to prove which fighting style was most effective. It is widely regarded as a direct forerunner of modern mixed martial arts.
