Sidestroke is a swimming stroke performed on one's side, using an asymmetrical scissor kick and alternating arm pulls, historically valued for its efficiency and the swimmer's ability to keep their head above water. It was widely used in lifesaving and lifeguard training because it allows a rescuer to tow a person while swimming, and it requires less exertion than strokes like freestyle over long distances. Though less common in competitive swimming today, it remains taught in lifeguard and water safety certification courses.
