The shimmy is a dance movement involving rapid, rhythmic shaking of the shoulders, chest, or hips while keeping the rest of the body relatively still. It became a popular social dance craze in 1920s jazz-age America and remains a core technique in belly dance and other hip-and-torso-isolation dance forms today.
