Pentathlon refers to an athletic competition made up of five distinct events, with the ancient Greek Olympic version combining running, long jump, javelin, discus, and wrestling. The modern pentathlon, created for the 1912 Olympics, instead tests fencing, swimming, equestrian show jumping, and a combined pistol-shooting-and-cross-country-running event. It rewards well-rounded athleticism and was originally designed to simulate the skills of a 19th-century cavalry soldier.
