Pankration was an ancient Greek combat sport combining elements of boxing and wrestling, allowing strikes, holds, chokes, and joint locks with very few rules (biting and eye-gouging were typically the only prohibitions). It was introduced to the ancient Olympic Games in 648 BC and was prized as a test of an athlete's all-around fighting ability. Modern practitioners and mixed martial arts enthusiasts study and revive it as a historical precursor to today's MMA.
