Pall-mall is an alternate spelling of pall mall (paille-maille), a lawn game from 16th- and 17th-century England and France in which players struck a ball with a mallet down a long alley, trying to drive it through a suspended metal ring at the end using the fewest hits. It is regarded as a precursor to modern croquet and golf and lent its name to London's Pall Mall street, once a fashionable venue for the game. It is now primarily of historical rather than recreational interest.
