National steel refers to the metal-bodied resonator guitars originally made by the National String Instrument Corporation starting in the late 1920s, prized for their loud, bright, metallic tone produced by internal spun-aluminum resonator cones. These guitars became iconic in blues and slide-guitar playing, and vintage and reissue National steel guitars remain sought after by roots-music and blues guitarists.
