Muay boran is the traditional, pre-modern form of Thai boxing practiced before the sport was codified into the modern rules of Muay Thai in the early 20th century. It encompasses a variety of regional styles used historically for both self-defense and battlefield combat, employing strikes with fists, elbows, knees, and shins along with grappling and clinch techniques. Today it is preserved and taught largely as a martial art and cultural heritage practice rather than a competitive combat sport.
