A marudai is a traditional Japanese wooden braiding stand used in kumihimo, the centuries-old craft of making intricately woven cords. It consists of a round mirror-like top with a central hole through which weighted bobbins of thread are passed and braided in a rotating pattern. Historically used to make cords for samurai armor and kimono sashes, it remains popular today among fiber-craft hobbyists making jewelry and decorative cords.
