Luta livre (Portuguese for "free fight") is a Brazilian grappling martial art and combat sport that emphasizes takedowns, ground control, and submissions performed without a gi, distinguishing it from Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. It developed in Rio de Janeiro in the mid-20th century, influenced partly by catch wrestling, and became prominent in Brazilian vale-tudo and early mixed martial arts competitions. Practitioners value its practical no-gi techniques for self-defense and MMA.
