Kung fu (or gongfu) is an umbrella term for the many traditional Chinese martial arts, encompassing hundreds of distinct styles such as Wing Chun, Shaolin, and Tai Chi that emphasize striking, grappling, weapons, and forms (choreographed movement sequences). It has roots going back centuries in Chinese military, monastic (notably Shaolin Buddhist), and folk traditions, and blends combat technique with philosophy, discipline, and health cultivation. It has become globally popular through martial arts films and is practiced for self-defense, fitness, and cultural tradition.
