The Jew's harp is a small lamellophone instrument consisting of a flexible metal or bamboo tongue attached to a frame, which the player holds against their teeth or lips and plucks while shaping the mouth cavity to alter resonance. It produces a twangy, buzzing drone with overtones that can be shaped into simple melodies, and variants of it appear in folk music traditions from Siberia and Mongolia to Austria and Southeast Asia. Hobbyists enjoy it for its portability, meditative playing technique, and connection to traditional and throat-singing-adjacent musical styles.
