Freestyle is a broad term used across many sports and arts to describe a discipline or event in which the participant has significant creative or technical freedom rather than following a single prescribed form—examples include freestyle swimming (in which competitors typically swim front crawl, the fastest stroke, since no specific technique is mandated), freestyle wrestling, freestyle rap, and freestyle skiing or skating. What unites these is an emphasis on individual technique, improvisation, or self-expression within loosely defined rules.
