Free step is a competitive category in aerobic/step aerobics in which athletes perform a choreographed routine of steps, jumps, and strength moves on a raised step platform, set to music and judged on difficulty, synchronization, and execution. It grew out of group fitness step classes into a formalized competitive discipline recognized by aerobic gymnastics and fitness federations.
