Contact improvisation is a dance form developed in the 1970s, pioneered by choreographer Steve Paxton, in which two or more dancers move spontaneously while maintaining a point of physical contact, exploring weight-sharing, momentum, and balance. Unlike choreographed dance, it relies on real-time responsiveness between partners rather than predetermined steps. Practitioners are drawn to its improvisational freedom, physical trust-building, and the way it blurs lines between dance, martial arts, and play.
