The C melody saxophone is a type of saxophone pitched in C rather than the standard B-flat (tenor) or E-flat (alto), allowing players to read piano or vocal sheet music directly without transposing. It was especially popular in American parlors and dance bands during the 1900s–1920s as an accessible instrument for amateur home musicians, but it declined in popularity by the 1930s as B-flat and E-flat saxophones became standard for ensemble playing.
