Buzkashi is a traditional equestrian team sport played across Central Asia, and is the national sport of Afghanistan, in which mounted riders compete to grab a headless goat or calf carcass from the ground and carry it around a marker or into a goal while other riders try to wrest it away. Matches can involve dozens of riders and take place over rough, open terrain, demanding exceptional horsemanship, strength, and endurance. It has deep cultural roots among nomadic peoples of the region and is often tied to celebrations and displays of status.
