The butterfly stroke is one of the four competitive swimming strokes, characterized by both arms sweeping simultaneously through the water in a circular motion while the legs perform a synchronized dolphin kick. It is considered the most physically demanding stroke due to the upper-body strength and precise timing required to keep the body undulating efficiently. It was developed in the 1930s as a variant of breaststroke and became its own recognized Olympic event in 1956.
